Rough Draft #1 of my artist statement!!

We all have a little Hot Dog Wizard inside of us.

Confused? Allow me to explain:

Throughout our lives, we all, at some time or another, have feelings of inadequacy stemming from the notion that someone in better than we are. Personally, as an animator coming from a family that breeds doctors, I often felt, growing up, that my passions were foolish in the eyes of my peers. As I have matured as an artist, however, I have come to the realization that it’s not the fact that I am subpar, but that each person has their own personal talent that they enact on. For my final animation at MCA, I have decided to craft a story that speaks to both the inadequacy of my childhood and my realization of self-worth.

“The Amazing Hot Dog Wizard” presents us with the titular character, a wizard who can turn any object into a hot dog, whose confidence is shaken when another more powerful wizard steals the limelight. However, in the end, the Hot Dog Wizard uses his powers to save the day, and, through this, rediscovers his self-worth.

By creating a character with a incredible talent and then dashing that character’s self-confidence before bringing him to his epiphany, I create a digestible story arc that recreates the arc I personally went through as an artist.  For when my audience watches the piece, I wanted to create something that’s at once familiar and fantastic, while simultaneously entertaining.  By making an emotion like inadequacy digestible and fun, I can entertain my audience while still delivering my message.

HUGE FREAKIN' UPDATE TIME.

Okay folks, my last post to this blog was way back in November. Yup, three months ago. Time for me to slam a ton on ya.

FIRSTLY, allow me to preface this by posting what I turned in last semester-

The Amazing Hot Dog Wizard (1st Whole Rough) from Nicolas Pflug on Vimeo.

Okay, so as we can see I had a ton of rough, un-colored scenes, plus another half that was still storyboard. That was in December. Initially, I had intended to finish the rough animation by the end of the Christmas break. However, this plan fell through due to ToonBoom crashing on my laptop, and me losing the activation key so I couldn't move it to my pc. I was able to fix the problem (turns out the key is hidden in a folder buried DEEEEEP in the source file), but I still lost a ton of crucial work time. Nonetheless, once I returned I decided to start forging ahead. However, I felt in order to establish a finished look for the piece, I needed to refine and color the first half. I wanted to finish this two weeks ago, but due to the roughness and the frame-by-frame nature of the animation, it's taken a long time to get the piece back on track. Allow me to show you the animation I have refined and colored so far. Please note, there are scenes in between that are still getting worked on, so there will eb a flash of black in the video indicating where the missing footage is:

So yeah, still got a long way to go, but better. Much better. But yeah, whats up with that missing footage? Allow me to explain: as you can tell from the rough I presented last semester, the reaction shots to the Whatever-You-Want Wizard still leave MUCH to be desired. Also, the chewing scenes needed a ton of work. For reference, here's all the shots I didn't include and am working on right now:

And here's a gif of the new chew animation for the lady, now a quick bite instead to give more punch:

Still rough, but WAAAY better than what I had before. Expect all of the footage from the reassessment finished by next Tuesday (have family visiting this weekend, so I'll be a little behind). Also, no clue why blogger does that weird ghosting thing, to see the cleaned up animation go here: http://doodledido.tumblr.com/post/43069261749/still-rough-but-heres-a-gif-of-a-lady-eating-a

As you can see, this is taking a very long to finish. I'm still aiming to have all the animation done by the picture lock date of March 6. To show a sample week illustrating my work schedule in order to maximize output:

Basically, the red blocks indicate the time I have partitioned for work. The blank spaces are where I'll be sleeping. Obviously, at some point I'll be working on other classes and my internship's outside work, but the top priority is the BFA. In any case, still have a crazy amount of work to do, but gonna get it done in order to make this the absolute best piece I can make it be!

Third, walk cycles I've been working on-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlSXUN4GcQE&feature=youtu.be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fdUNu43-FI&feature=youtu.be

Last, a total of all animation done as of right now-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T33mkPnllqI&feature=youtu.be

As far as my timeline goes-

My goal is to have all of this line animation completely finished a week from today. What this will allow me to do is 1.) ensure that I will have a screenable piece by the end of the semester, a recquirement set for me by Jill, and 2.) will allow me to spend the rest of the semester refining the animation and coloring it in. As far as the whole animation goes (not dealing with the semester) I want to have all animation refined and colored in by December 31.

Add another 50 hours, bringing my total to 133 hours.

Running Pony Cover Letter

I'm applying for the spring internship, so I figured I'd change my first cover letter from Disney to them, just so I can feel out where I need to take my other ones. Here's a copy of it I sent to Carrie-

Dear Mr. Abart,

As a senior animation student at Memphis College of Art, I’m very interested in your spring 2013 internship position at Running Pony Productions. I have worked with AfterEffects, ToonBoom, Maya, and live-action film, and I believe my education has given me the right tools for whatever job you need an intern to do. Also, I have worked on two freelance design jobs, solidifying my design sense and giving me the knowledge I need to work with a client. With the skill set I’ve developed, I feel I am a very strong candidate for Running Pony’s internship.
My education at MCA has prepared me well for the workforce, having worked with a variety of programs that not only increased my program fluency, but also gave me the ability to be flexible and efficient in my program use. Animation is my passion, and last semester I was elected to be the Animation Club’s president. This has been invaluable, because it has given me the opportunity to be a leader in my community, while working with other team members to orchestrate events for the school. I’ve also taken a variety of design classes, ranging from two-dimensional to web, constantly refining my aesthetic sense.
In addition, I’ve had two opportunities to flex my design muscle in the professional world as well, working for Lakeview Regional Hospital’s cycling team in Covington, Louisiana and Cynthia Kehoe, a professional photographer working out of New Orleans. These two jobs allowed me to push myself aesthetically while working within client-driven boundaries, which was an invaluable experience. I receive criticism extremely well, and I strive to deliver the best product I can. I learn quickly and, more importantly, am excited to learn from you. All of these things enforce how ideal I am for your spring internship.
If you are looking for an intern that can contribute to your company’s production and learn everything you have to teach and apply it, then please contact me. My portfolio can be reviewed at nickpflug.com, and I encourage you to see exactly why I’m such a strong candidate. Thank you for your time and consideration- I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Nick Pflug

Oct. 9

It's been a long while since updates, but here are my character backgrounds for my piece. By next Thursday I'll have all of the still, simple parts of my animation roughed out and in comp in order to gauge where I need to add, remove, and move around details in the background.

Considering the amount of work, it took a grand total of 19 hours, bringing my grand total to 51 hours.
